The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is regarded as one of the strongest healthcare systems in the world. In 2014, the Commonwealth Fund found it to be the most impressive overall when compared with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.S.A.
However, as of 2012, there are only 2.8 physicians per 1,000 people. When compared to Germany (4.0), Italy (3.9), Spain (3.8), France (3.3), Australia (3.3), New Zealand (2.7), and Canada (2.5), this means the UK is lagging behind. To counter this, the NHS has been increasing spending on agency staff and recruitment from overseas. If you’re interested in working in the UK, read on to find out more.
Work Visa
In order to more easily find a position, it’s recommended that nurses from overseas commit to working in the country for at least one year. Not only will you be a more attractive employee, but a year gives you a better opportunity to properly experience the culture of the country, especially if you opt for a large city like London. You can apply for an overseas business visa up to three months before you travel to the UK, and you can expect a response within three weeks. Your visa will last three years, with the option of extending it for a further two years. If you find yourself enjoying life in the UK after this time, you can consider becoming a British citizen after the five years are complete.
Assessments
Before you can start job hunting, you’ll need be assessed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). In 2014, the NMC announced that nurses and midwives who completed their training outside the European Economic Area will have to undergo a competence test. This is to assess applicants against the NMC’s standards for pre-registration education. The assessment contains two parts: a multiple choice scenario-based secure computer-based examination and a practical objective structured clinical examination. While you’ll need to pass these tests to work in the country, they should be relatively simple procedures if you’re already experienced in your role.
Once you’ve handled all the formalities, you can start applying for positions. Because of the competition for places, it’s a good idea to start applying early so you can take advantage of all the life improving benefits of moving to the UK. Take a look at national agencies like Nursing Personnel to keep on top of all the available vacancies as they’re posted.
